Middle School Teachers' Perceptions of School Administrators' Enforcement of School Rules for African American Students
Williams, John A., III
Journal of Classroom Interaction, v56 n2 p4-16 2022
This study investigated teachers' perception of their school administrators as consistent enforcers of school code-of-conduct rules, and if their rating of consistency was associated with an increase or decrease in risk ratio for African American students in middle schools in North Carolina. Findings suggest that teachers viewed their school administrators as inconsistent when applying school discipline. However, as teachers' ratings improved, the risk ratio for African American students' out-of-school suspensions decreased. School administrators' disciplinary decisions have a direct influence on teachers' capacity to effectively manage classroom behavior, which is the genesis of the majority of office discipline referrals.
