When Power Is the Limit: The Image of the Professor in Selected Fiction.
Major, Claire H.
Innovative Higher Education, v23 n2 p127-43 Win 1998
The professor has appeared as a fictional character since the Middle Ages, and several professorial images occur in academic fiction. Analysis of fictional images reveals that authors most often depict professors with no ambitions to gain power, whether economic, personal, political, or philosophical, as estimable characters; authors condemn characters who exert power to gain money, relationships, position, or knowledge.
