The Recognition of Cultural Bias in Researching Those Labelled Gifted: An Overdue Perspective
Mazzoli Smith, L.; Campbell, R. J.
Gifted and Talented International, v27 n1 p55-61 Aug 2012
This commentary addresses the analysis in Persson's (2012a) article. According to the authors, the agenda for change amongst scholars has four productive proposals. These are: (1) that scholars should broaden their disciplinary outlook beyond psychology and education; (2) that they should eschew policy borrowing; (3) that they should clarify, for themselves as well as for their readers, whether their objective is emic or etic; and (4) the requirement that scholars demonstrate cultural competence (as they currently do in ethical matters). In this commentary, the authors point out two key aspects to a paradigm shift which would necessarily effect the changes in the field which Persson (2012a) and others advocate. This shift would lead to a newly conceived field of giftedness research with a number of characteristics.
