Libraries at the Ready
Celano, Donna C.; Neuman, Susan B.
Educational Leadership, v73 n5 p74-77 Feb 2016
Because English language learners enter kindergarten at a distinct disadvantage, Celano and Neuman examine the role public libraries can play in rallying around these young children to better prepare them for school. The authors document a new program called Every Child Ready to Read, which recently launched in 4,000 public libraries across the United States, aimed at educating parents of preschool-aged ELLs about five practices for school readiness--talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing. Through workshops and community events, librarians teach parents how--and why--to integrate these practices at home. The librarians' work includes dispelling myths about language acquisition, bridging cultural gaps, and overcoming barriers to get families to the library in the first place. Pulling from a year-long study that included interviews with librarians and observations of programming, the authors conclude that libraries are especially poised to make a dramatic impact on preschool-aged ELLs. They also explore key takeaways schools can glean from these efforts.
