Student Leadership with Distance Education
Kusçu, Meltem; Arslan, Hasan
Quarterly Review of Distance Education, v22 n3 p23-34 2021
This study aims to improve the leadership skills of sixth-grade students. Generally, student leadership models are made for higher education. There are very few studies on younger age groups. This study was synthesized, and 13 student leadership dimensions were determined. Since these dimensions are not a continuation of each other, they are considered independently, it is deemed appropriate to create a modular program. An experimental design was used in this study. As the study group, 33 students (16 in the experimental group and 17 in the control group) participated in sixth-grade students from two secondary schools in Çanakkale province. Within the scope of the study, 13 student leadership modules were determined according to expert opinions, considering the sixth-grade cognitive development levels. The control group watched only short videos about the modules, about one and a half minutes, about leadership dimensions. After watching the videos, the experimental group, activities to improve leadership skills were made through distance learning. As a result, when the student leadership program, which consists of 13 modules developed within the scope of the study, was delivered through video and activities and distance education, it was observed that the students were able to gain leadership skills. Furthermore, significant differences were found between the experimental group and the control group. This study is part of the ongoing doctoral dissertation named "Student Leadership Development Study."
