Homegrown Education
Finkel, Ed
Community College Journal, v90 n3 p10-15 Dec 2019-Jan 2020
Rural areas depend upon community colleges to train people for the fields that match their regions' current and growing needs. To do so, these colleges must keep abreast of the employment trends in their area, be aware of where jobs have been lost and where they are being gained and determine how to recruit students who might be reluctant to be retrained. This can include techniques like distance education and on-campus housing, given the sometimes-daunting travel times to campus. The article examines some of the programs that community colleges have created to meet this need.
