Text Messaging: The Enrollment Management Strategy for Increasing Enrollment and Promoting a Sense of Belonging for Low-Income Students
Patturelli, Alex
College and University, v96 n4 p61-66 Nov 2021
Enrollment offices deploy various outreach methods including mailings, brochures, phone calls, and email campaigns. For these undergraduate admissions offices, working with high school students creates opportunities to shift the enrollment approach every academic year. Evolving admissions strategy created a chance to change the print marketing approach to an outreach strategy using email communication. Enrollment disparities demonstrate evidence that the admissions practices targeting low-income school districts should continue to evolve. Low-income students continue to face growing discrepancies compared to their peers. A new outreach approach, based in relationship building, should be adopted by admissions offices. Utilizing text messaging as the primary admissions communication brings opportunities for admissions offices to eliminate some outreach barriers that contribute to lower enrollment amongst low-income students. Universities committed to making an impact in low-income communities can move toward that goal by deploying accessible admissions outreach through text messaging.
