From Camp to College: How Skills from Camp Transfer to College Life
Murphy, Meghan
College Student Journal, v56 n1 p41-52 Mar 2022
Summer camp jobs are often described as a fun and active way to spend the summer. This research aims to go beyond the surface, examining how college students use the skills and training they receive as summer day camp counselors and describing the specific ways they transfer those skills to academic settings. In-depth interviews were conducted with fourteen (14) currently enrolled college students who spend their summers working as day camp counselors at camps accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). The findings of this qualitative research show that leadership skills, patience, and collaboration/working together are some of the main skills that are transferable to a college environment. This research will outline the specific ways students use these skills in college classrooms and within the larger campus community.
