Professional Preparedness: Starting with the Sophomore Experience
Phelps, Sean; Milstein, Sloane; French, Patrice
College Student Journal, v57 n1 p11-22 Mar 2023
Many academic programs often require work integrated learning (WIL) in the form of internships, fieldwork, and practicums. As a method of preparing students for entry level employment, WIL experiences have been found to be beneficial by the student, employer, and advisors. However, researchers and academics commonly cite the need for additional experiences prior to a WIL and within the academic curriculum to develop knowledge, skills and abilities (Fleming, Martin, Hughes, & Zinn, 2009). This study considered assignments, activities, and events to enhance underclassman skills associated with professional preparedness, before undertaking WIL experiences as seniors. This research started as a course feedback loop. Using a mixed-method approach, an anonymous survey and reflection, participants reported on their experiences. Findings indicate that skills embedded in a second-year practical skills course were well received and had a valuable impact as participants worked toward career readiness. Exposing freshmen and sophomores to career preparation before entering the professional phase of their program suggests that students gain confidence, competency, and increased awareness of skills vital to being a competent sport management professional.
