The "Dana Decision" and Its Impact Relative to On-Line Universities
Snell, Joel C.
College Student Journal, v46 n4 p852-855 Dec 2012
Dana College (Dana.edu) was dying. A corporation was willing to buy it. However, Dana did not teach in the main, 21st century technical skills which is true of most little liberal arts colleges. Dana's demise first came in cuts for faculty in terms of benefits (Manghan, K. 1/16/2009). The entrance of the federal government was an attempt to stop a non-accredited on line corporation schools, buy legitimacy through an accredited school (Harkin, T. 9/1/2010). To get workers back into the work force, they may need some liberal arts, but a great deal of money would at this time be non-transferable credits in skills training. Dana could provide that by partnering with a nearby community college. However, all this would require a great deal of work and money. The direction of the on-line corporation was just the opposite. They wanted to purchase the school for its accreditation and teach some classes on campus, but make most of their money in on-line classes. Thus, the corporation would have an accredited home base to start selling distant learning classes through package courses.
