Lucy Wheelock was the 2nd president of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) (1895-1899), then the International Kindergarten Union. She also became involved in the National Congress of Mothers, a forerunner of the Parent Teachers Association. In 1929, she was appointed to the education committee of the League of Nations. In 1888, following the introduction of kindergartens into the Boston public school system, Wheelock instituted a one-year training course for teachers. In 1896, Wheelock formed the independent Wheelock Kindergarten Training School. This article advocates the philosophy that education should foster in children the love of the good and the beautiful. Wheelock believed it to be the function of education to secure for every individual a store of ideas that should become productive, creative forces in life. She believed that human beings ascend the scale of being through admiration, faith, and love. In this article, she champions those ideals while at the same time rejoicing in curriculum changes--stating that a fixed program does not conform to the growing needs of children with varying tastes, interests, and skills. Still, she warns that the higher ideals such as patriotism, service, and brotherhood should not be omitted from the kindergarten curriculum.
