Listening to Students: Creating Democratic Spaces
Castor, Maggie
Change: The Magazine of Higher Learning, v43 n5 p65-66 2011
Spontaneity, embodied learning, active engagement in the community, boundary pushing--this is what the author could always count on when coming to Reclaiming Democracy as a student. As it was taught in the fall 2009 semester, the class was a multi-university and multi-community experience that included facilitators and students from Elon University, Greensboro College, Guilford College, the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, and any groups or individuals outside of the university system who wanted to learn about democracy at a local level. To participate in Reclaiming Democracy meant to recognize the needs, perspectives, and desires of a wide variety of people in order to create more democratic spaces. In other words, this course was an engaged and holistic educational experience that was tailored for the particular individuals in the course and for their shared space, whether that meant the classroom, Greensboro, community organizations, or academia. Reclaiming Democracy takes as its goal not only to teach about democratic thinking and practices but also to "embody" them. The students were not being asked to learn about democracy as an abstract concept; instead, they became entangled in the complexities of democratic thinking and action on the streets outside their classrooms and homes.
