A third study on variables differentiating persisters from dropouts from French study was conducted to determine whether motivation mediates the influence of attitude on persistence. A presentation of a study and evaluation of a late-immersion French program in British Columbia. Grade Ten students took one semenster in which French was the only language of instruction. Proficiency of these students increased significantly. The findings, along with previous research, suggest that late immersion is a feasible option. (AMH)

A procedure involving dialogue and an oral paraphrase of a text is suggested as a means of developing communication skills. Student errors in communicative exchange compared with their errors in structural and prepared exercises, recurring sources of errors, and utilization of these sources in productive learning situations are discussed. A secondary school French immersion program in Montreal is discussed. A research and testing program to evaluate student performance is described.
