Doing Assessment as If Teaching Matters: Changing the Assessment Culture in an Academic Division
Hunt-Bull, Nicholas; Packey, Helen M.
Assessment Update, v19 n6 p1-2, 14-15 Nov-Dec 2007
Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) is a private institution with some 1,800 undergraduate students and approximately 117 faculty, 34 of whom teach in the School of Liberal Arts. In October 2005, the vice president for academic affairs asked these authors to attend the Assessment Institute in Indianapolis. As full-time faculty, it was their first exposure to assessment beyond the limited grading and reflecting on one's teaching that all professors do. In an attempt to engage the faculty in meaningful and civilized discourse about assessment, the authors created a project to further develop a culture of assessment within the School of Liberal Arts. This essay recounts their experiences in attempting to educate their colleagues about assessment. Through these experiences, they discovered that more resources and support from the administration would have been helpful, and recommend that those who are serious about creating a culture of assessment should start small, get all of the faculty involved, reward effort, and let the data drive your decisions.
