Building a Campuswide Culture of Assessment: Including Nonacademic Departments in the Process
Grackin, Janice A.
Assessment Update, v17 n5 p1-2, 12-13 Sep-Oct 2005
Building a campuswide culture of assessment is a complex, long-term goal, and the process for achieving such a lofty goal must be thoughtfully planned, persistently and sensitively implemented, and, above all, inclusive of the various campus constituencies that form the backbone of the academic community. Often as campus assessment initiatives proceed, nonacademic departments and programs may be included only in support roles for academic departments or, worse, relegated to the observers' gallery with no active role whatsoever. This article describes the evolution of one collaboration, the Student Study Habits Project, which brought a nonacademic department--the Division of Campus Residences--into an active participatory role in growing the culture of assessment on the campus of a midsize, suburban public research university.
