The Road to Degrees for Teachers in England: 1833 to 1965
Bradley-Levine, Jill
American Educational History Journal, v35 n1 p81-92 2008
Paine and Sedlak (1994) refer to education in England as always having been "vertically differentiated" and "horizontally separated" (1994, 160). This paper takes their identification a step further by analyzing how the differentiation and separation of national education impacted the teaching profession. In addition, the paper will explore the contrast between the enthusiastic involvement of the churches and the state, and the often reluctant involvement of the universities in teacher education.
