A group of student teachers and their subgroups were categorized on the basis of priorities assigned to expectations arrayed in a 60-item Q sort. Highest priority was attached to items reflecting direct and positive interaction with pupils. Based on lower level priorities, three types of student teachers were distinguished. (JC)

In 1987, the University of British Columbia's one-year teacher education program revised coursework extensively and increased fieldwork. After three months, new-program student teachers reported significantly greater increases in feelings of preparedness to teach than had old-program participants after six months. Compared to baseline scores, self-efficacy and feelings of preparedness to teach increased for student teachers after the first and second terms of a three-term revised University of British Columbia postdegree teacher education program.
