In a society that doesn't always live up to its ideals, how can we encourage college students to live publicly involved, culturally aware lives? This article proposes offering students an extensive education in the "democratic arts" through learning communities; community-based learning; diversity education; interdisciplinary studies and general education; as well as living and learning programs.
