This lesson plan asks students to use documents from "California As I Saw It: First Person Narratives, 1849-1900," in the American Memory Project to create a script depicting the motivations, expectations, fears, and realizations of immigrants who settled California between 1849 and 1900. According to the lesson plan, "California As I Saw It" consists of the full texts and illustrations of 190 works documenting the formative era of California's history through eyewitness accounts--the collection covers the dramatic decades between the Gold Rush and the turn of the 20th century. The plan intends for the student's finished product to be a "hypertext," an online written dialogue, containing links to illustrative written materials, images, and sound file from the American Memory collections. It first presents an overview and a sample hyperscript. The lesson plan contains a "student page" with explanatory information, including educational objectives, sources required, dramatic elements required, and project stages. It also contains a "teacher page" which outlines objectives; gives time required, discusses curriculum fit; lists resources; details a step-by-step procedure for the lesson's classroom implementation; and discusses extension and evaluation.
