Surveying Student Goals to Aid Institutional Effectiveness: Student Goals Survey Research Report.
Freeman, Robin Mark; And Others
A survey was conducted at Vista College to determine the educational and occupational goals of students enrolled in the Environmental Energy Technology Program. A seven-item survey was distributed in class over a five-semester period, soliciting information on academic and employment goals, current employment status, interest in networking with students and professionals in the field, and interest in a solar or conservation job training program. Study findings, based on responses from 88 students, included the following: (1) approximately 50% of the students indicated that they wished to achieve a degree or certificate; (2) 81% anticipated employment in the energy field or intended to apply what they learned to their current profession; (3) 26% wanted to pursue more education in the energy field; (4) 70% were not currently employed in the energy field; (5) over 90% were interested in networking with other students; and (6) 89% showed interest in a job training program. Responses from students who were surveyed more than once showed a consistency in goals over time. In response to the survey, the educational program was altered by faculty and administrators. An increase in achievement of student and institutional goals suggests that the survey is a low-cost tool for improving institutional effectiveness. The survey instrument is appended. (LAL)
