Solar Workbook. A Step by Step Procedure for Assessing Solar Opportunities in Existing Buildings in New York State.
New York State Energy Office, Albany.; Ehrenkrantz Group, New York, NY.; Kallen & Lemelson, New York, NY.; Perkins and Will, Architects, Chicago, IL.
Determining the feasibility of modifying existing buildings to take advantage of solar energy requires a formal technical study. This workbook is designed to help the reader perform a preliminary analysis to decide whether investing in such a formal study would be beneficial. The book guides the user through an exploration of the general characteristics of solar energy as they relate to the user's buildings, then helps the user consider the application of active and passive solar systems to the situation identified. A final section discusses the implications of the results of the user's survey. Aspects of solar energy use covered include building life, periods of occupancy, shading conditions, types of collectors and storage methods available, and relative costs and benefits involved in different applications.
