First Steps in Character Education
Hill, Patty Smith
Childhood Education, v93 n3 p219-222 2017
For many centuries, there has been theoretical statements asserting faith in character as the main objective in education, but it is only comparatively recently enough has been known about character and the scientific conditions for its development to make an honored place for it in the curricula. Today, it is creeping into curricula under new captions, many of which are only new names for different approaches to the old problem of character training. In the courses of study in one city, it may appear under the heading of citizenship or conduct curricula; in another, it is called the socialized recitation or the social organization of the school. In this article, the author discusses character and the role it plays in education. [Excerpts from this article are reprinted from "Childhood Education" v3 n8 1927 in celebration of "Childhood Education's" 125 year anniversary.]
