The artist Christine Borland, born in Scotland, is well known for fusing art and science. She was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1997, and developed an early interest in the representation of the body. This interest blossomed into a broader exploration of the medical world through art with such works as "Second Class Male, Second Class Female," an installation comprised of human skulls, bronze heads and documentation; and "Five Set Conversation Pieces," a series of hand-painted skulls made of bone china. This article presents an interview with Borland on topics like her attraction to medical themes, her teaching of communication skills to medical students, and the role of the artist in an institution such as a Medical Faculty.
