Workshop 6 by and for Teachers: The Teacher as Writer.
Barbieri, Maureen, Ed.; Rief, Linda, Ed.
A testament to the belief that K-12 teachers should be writers, this book invites readers into the classrooms and minds of teachers who write. The fiction, poetry, personal essays, and two teacher interviews celebrate the power of writing and invite teachers to become more seriously involved in writing for themselves. The classrooms described in the book are enlivened by teachers sharing their emerging drafts with students, and building a community of writers dedicated to craft. The poems, personal essays, and short fiction in the book are: (1) "Voice" (Mary Mercer Krogness); (2) "Teachers Writing, Writers Teaching: Serving Two Passions" (Michael Steinberg); (3) "Writer as Teacher: Lessons from Bette Greene" (Maureen Barbieri); (4) "How Infinite in Poetries: Celebrating Ourselves as Teachers" (Mary Pierce Brosmer); (5) "A Teacher Writes to Find Her Way" (Sharon Lauer Miller); (6) "Sweet Summer Preserves: Writing All Year Long" (Lisa Siemens); (7) "The Amusement Park" (Lawrence Sipe); (8) "Dakota Grain: Writing a Multi-Genre Paper" (Linda Cunningham); (9) "Delivering Milk with Father" (William Johnson); (10) "Engaged in Learning: An Interview with Susan Benedict" (Marci Howell); (11) "A Winter's Dusk, A Child's Voice" (Patricia McDonald-O'Brien); (12) "Homeward" (Ellen Rennard); (13) "W-O-U-N-D as in Gunshot" (Jacqueline Murphy); (14) "Eleven is too Young to Die" (Lisa Noble); (15) "Receiving a River" (Richard L. Havenga); (16) "Words: An Expression of Order" (Kerry Ridolfi); and (17) "Writing for Life: Teacher and Students" (Linda Rief). A call for manuscripts for the seventh book in the "Workshop" series and a description of the first five books in the series are attached. (RS)
