This publication provides information for intervention and prevention services concerning sexual harassment and sexual discrimination in schools. It is especially designed for student services professionals and includes national and state laws, suggestions for how to work with students, and strategies for protecting employees and students. Chapter 1 discusses the need for this publication and the forms of harassment that often occur in schools. Chapter 2 explains the federal protections and how these laws are implemented. Chapter 3 relates what needs to be known to prevent sexual harassment and assault, including prevention strategies; environmental assessments; staff evaluation; awareness activities for students; reporting requirements; and ways of protecting yourself. Chapter 4 is directed towards student services practices and discusses how to intervene in and investigate sexual harassment. A list of resources usually available from state Departments of Education is included. Appendixes include: State Laws Prohibiting Sex Discrimination and Sexual Harassment, Information on these State and Federal Laws, A Sample School District Policy, a True/False Quiz, a group worksheet, and Case Studies dealing with Sexual Harassment.
