School-Based Interventions for Sexually Aggressive Youths with Developmental Disabilities
Pruitt, Doyle K.; Dulmus, Catherine N.
School Social Work Journal, v34 n2 p56-70 Mar 2010
Sexual aggression in children and youths has received increased attention over the past twenty years as a result of increasing awareness of the problem. Yet despite this augmentation of interest, limited attention has been paid to sexual aggression in children and youths with developmental disabilities. As a group, juveniles are responsible for approximately 20 percent of sexual assaults committed in the United States. This article provides an overview of the factors commonly known to contribute to the development of sexual aggression in developmentally disabled youths and the impact of early identification and intervention on youths' self-concept and behavioral outcomes. It concludes with recommendations specifically for school social workers to buttress the promotion of safety in the school environment and the healthy functioning of the sexually aggressive youths.
