A Different Call to Arms: Women in the Core of the Communications Revolution.
Rush, Ramona R.
A "best case" model for the role of women in the postindustrial communications era predicts positive leadership roles based on the preindustrial work characteristics of cooperation and consensus. A "worst case" model finds women entrepreneurs succumbing to the competitive male ethos and extracting the maximum amount of work from employees in an industrialized service economy. A brief review of successive communication technologies and the current status of women in communication fields suggests that women are going to have to enter into a process of "demythifying" future roles if new communication patterns are to effected. Women, as the world's "minoritized majority," have the experience and knowledge to promote a new world order based on a democratization of knowledge. Women must contribute their own insights, intuitions, experiences, research, interpretations, philosophies, and theories to world views and world hypotheses. Expanded and linked coalitions of women in all fields and endeavors can substantially aid in these efforts. (Author/FL)
