The objective of this research is to find out the problems and expectations of the students in Inonu University (in Malatya, a city in east Turkey) concerning the orientation services. An additional objective is to ascertain whether students' expectations with regard to orientation services differ according to their sex, their place of origin, and their previous university experiences (whether they have attended any universities before or not). This work intends to assist in deciding what to do to offer these services effectively at the university, which are included in the counseling and guidance services and categorized as student personnel services, and it intends to contribute to the planning of orientation services to be offered to the students, coupled with the precautions to be taken. The participants of this research comprises the 1st-year students enrolled in all faculties and vocational schools at Inonu University. Data were gathered via questionnaires and a personal information form, and analysed via an independent-samples t test, using a statistical software program. The problems that newcomers to the university experience have with regard to orientation services are listed and discussed. (Contains 3 tables.)
