The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore how participation in a class on servant leadership influenced the emergency services student's understanding of the role and characteristics of a servant leader. The setting for the study was a state university in the Western United States, with the six participants being declared emergency services majors that were all over the age of 18. The participants of the study underwent a 15-week leadership theory course that focused on servant leadership. The theoretical approach for the dissertation was that of servant leadership through the lens of a social constructivist, stemming from a desire to know how a servant leadership course influenced the individual emergency services student's understanding of the role and characteristics of a leader. The research design utilized multiple sources of evidence in the form of the participant's pre and post coursework questionnaires, student reflective journals, and end-of-course surveys to triangulate data for building a converging line of inquiry in order to explain the phenomena. The findings of the study showed that the experience of undergoing a servant leadership class influenced the students' understanding of the role and characteristics of a leader to more closely align with those of a servant leader, and that the experience left positive impressions on the students, possibly producing future servant leaders. The findings of this study add to the existing body of knowledge associated with servant leadership by expanding the subject into the emergency services field by relating the desire to serve that drives the emergency services responder to the desire to serve that drives one to become a servant leader.
