School Boarding 101: Winning Friends and Influencing People
Jefferies, Steve
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v22 n3 p35-37 Jan-Feb 2009
Despite overwhelming and increasing evidence of a children's obesity epidemic, public schools have been slow to respond with any sense of urgency. Ironically, as the epidemic worsens, there have been more instances of physical education program cuts--the principle school subject that has the potential to combat this epidemic. This author contends that part of the problem is that many health advocacy champions do not understand how to effectively work with local school boards in order to reverse this trend. Having spent eight years as a school board member, the author's intent in this article is to offer advice to would-be health and physical education advocates by presenting 10 steps for effective advocacy: (1) understand school board responsibilities; (2) connect health to academics; (3) remember the golden rule; (4) provide financial solutions not obstacles; (5) remember that there is strength in numbers; (6) be persistent; (7) stick to the point; (8) control your passion; (9) celebrate small victories; and (10) build relationships.
