Older Adult Participation in Higher Education. New Roles for Older Arkansans as Students and Educational Resources.
Graham, Lou; And Others
A random sample survey of people aged 50 and older was conducted to study the educational interests of older residents of Pulaski County, Arkansas. Telephone surveys were completed for 346 individuals. Findings showed that almost 85 percent of the respondents indicated an interest in education. Two-thirds of the respondents were women; 62 percent were married, the majority were white (82 percent); more than 58 percent had incomes ranging between $5,000 and $30,000; and, 26 percent were currently or recently involved in an educational program. The most common educational goals were personal growth and development, leisure time and hobby interests, and meeting interesting people. Areas of interest were pre-retirement planning, recreation and exercise, philosophy and religion, business, horticulture, and work-related skills. Preferred learning locations were churches or community centers, colleges, and senior citizen centers. A majority preferred weekday courses; 45 percent preferred morning programs. Barriers to participation were lack of interest, physical limitations, not enough time, and isolation. Need was indicated for these support services: transportation, career counseling, and financial aid. Over 34 percent expressed interest in teaching others. Recommendations were made for Arkansas postsecondary educational institutions to become more responsive to educational needs of older adults. (An annotated bibliography and the survey are appended.)
