Architectural Innovation: The Reconfiguration of Existing Product Technologies and the Failure of Established Firms.
Henderson, Rebecca M.; Clark, Kim B.
Administrative Science Quarterly, v35 n1 p9-30 Mar 1990
Using an empirical study of the semiconductor photolithographic alignment equipment industry, this paper shows that architectural innovations destroy the usefulness of established firms' architectural knowledge. Because this knowledge is embedded in the firms' structure and information-processing procedures, the destruction is hard to detect. Includes 51 references. (MLH)
