My Long Journey from Suffering to Life
Deng, Santino Atem
Reclaiming Children and Youth: The Journal of Strength-based Interventions, v15 n2 p71-72 Sum 2006
Santino Atem Deng, one of the '"lost" boys from Sudan, recounts his story of trauma and resilience, when as a nine-year-old, he fled from the civil war in his home country of southern Sudan. Separated from his parents, he joined a group of adults who were able to take care of him and other young people as they journeyed to Ethiopia. Deng tells of the trauma he experienced seeing his friends and loved ones dead and wanting to attend military school to take vengeance against those who had killed his father. The Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement (SPLP) dissuaded him from this flawed thinking and sent him and others his age to school in the refugee camp in Ethiopia. The SPLP school taught him self-defense and survival skills. They also taught him and his peers to support each other as brothers. Completing primary and secondary schools in the camp, he realized the importance of education for his future. Today, Deng is a behavior worker and community facilitator for the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Group Special Education (GSE). He is concerned about children around the world who are victimized, especially those who suffer because of civil war in their homeland. He states that working with traumatized people can be difficult because one also experiences trauma, but his training in mediation, arbitration, and litigation has benefited him in helping young people when they are in conflict.
