The labor market for young people can be seen as an independent, integral segment of the overall labor market, one that can be singled out on the basis of the way that young people function in society as a special social and demographic group characterized by the needs and interests that are typical of it, a group that occupies a specific place in the reproduction of work relations. The great diversity of the social, economic, and cultural life of Russian society as it goes through transformations shapes the specific environment of offerings, and that includes the sphere of the labor market as well. Having a relatively equal starting position does not constitute a guarantee that young people will have equal opportunities in the labor market in today's Russia. The strategy that is to be chosen and implemented depends on each individual's interpretation of success and the ways to achieve it. Market relations represent a public sphere in which relations between the sexes are construed, a sphere in which gender stratification is reflected in the persistent inequality of the chances in life that are enjoyed by men and women, as well as different work strategies. Tracking the gender specifics of young people's perceptions in the sphere of work was one of the tasks of a sociological survey titled "Young People in Today's Society." The survey was participated in by 1,000 young people between the ages of fourteen and thirty. The respondents were selected by a quota route sampling and a target audience; the method used was the in-person questionnaire survey. The main groups of young people were represented by gender and age; by marital status; by material well-being; and by area of occupation or activity. Drawing on the answers given by the respondents to this survey, the author explores the strategies of young people's self-determination in life in the sphere of work. (Contains 4 tables and 6 notes.)
