Innovations in Science and Mathematics Education in Schools in the Soviet Union. Science and Technology Education Document Series No. 24.
Demidova, S. I.; And Others
The current reform of general secondary education and vocational training in the USSR is aimed at further improving quality and meeting social demands. This document is an addendum to "Science and Mathematics Education in the General Secondary School in the Soviet Union," published in July 1986. It discusses some of the new reform thrusts in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. It focuses on recent efforts to: (1) introduce generalizing themes showing the scientific basis of major trends in scientific and technologial advances (along with the introduction of some professions to students); (2) equip students with practical skills in preparation for working life; (3) acquaint students with labor protection measures, industrial safety provisions, ecology and the protection of the natural environment; and (4) encourage students' inventiveness, research ability and design talent through laboratory exercises and workshop activities.
