A New Science of Leadership for Citizens of the Milky Way
Grace, Catherine O'Neill
Independent School, v72 n2 Win 2013
As a coauthor (with psychologists Michael Thompson and Lawrence Cohen) of "Best Friends, Worst Enemies: Understanding the Social Lives of Children," Catherine O'Neill Grace has spent much of the past few years researching the lives of children in the microcosm of schools. Lately, she has been wondering if the same social cruelty, process of reconciliation, and bonds of love and friendship seen in schools also exists in communities on the regional, national, and international scale. To gain insight, Grace talked to John Braman, an educational innovator and leading proponent of youth leadership development. Ten years ago as president of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS), Braman founded the Global Youth Leadership Institute (GYLI) and has remained active in youth development in Africa, Asia, Australia, Central America, Mexico, and Europe. In their conversation, Braman describes how, at the request of United World College-USA, he and his colleagues designed and implemented a two-week "short course" to distill the elements of the College's two-year International Baccalaureate degree and offer a Certificate in Intercultural Leadership. Global Leadership Forum (GLF) was launched in 2011 with 40 students and teachers from 17 nations around the world. This article describes how Braman taught the essentials of the College's two-year mission in this short time span using an innovative approach that draws on ancient traditions while tapping into the most current uses of technology.
