Dancing in Place: Site-Specific Work
Metal-Corbin, Josie
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, v83 n4 p31-37 Apr 2012
In her lecture the 2012 NDA Scholar/Artist, Josie Metal-Corbin, chronicles four decades of working with artists, educators, librarians, and scientists. The kinetic language of dance and the visual impact of specific environments provide provocative opportunities for collaboration, wherein the site becomes the framework or map for the dance design. Metal-Corbin has created works in museums, zoos, gardens, kitchens, and deep in prairie grass, among other places. Her approaches to site-specific choreography are generated by research, interpretation of spatial characteristics, and a consideration of the political, cultural, and historical aspects of the venue. The convergence of dancers with members of the community at a specific site is an integral part of exploring the boundaries of "dancing in place."
