Frederick Law Olmsted and the Origins of Modern Campus Design.
Schuyler, David
Planning for Higher Education, v25 n2 p1-10 Win 1996-1997
Concurrent with the rise of the new land-grant universities at the end of the nineteenth century, Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-93) introduced ideas about campus planning and landscaping in the United States that still animate much of contemporary university planning. While he never established rules or guidelines, his various reports reflect five general principles of design. (MSE)
