Concurrent with the rise of the new land-grant universities at the end of the nineteenth century, Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-93) introduced ideas about campus planning and landscaping in the United States that still animate much of contemporary university planning. While he never established rules or guidelines, his various reports reflect five general principles of design. (MSE)
