Hudson River School
McCloskey, Patrick J.
Teacher Magazine, v16 n3 p31-35 Nov-Dec 2004
In this article, the author features the "Clearwater," a full-size working replica of a 19th century Hudson River cargo sloop. The "Clearwater" has been serving New York state students as a link to both local history and the environment, helping them to learn lessons about the history of the Hudson River and the environment, thereby supplementing the state's social studies and science curricula. Aboard the "Clearwater" with chief educator, Dan Kricheff, lessons for elementary school students are more hands-on, with the adventure of sailing a tall ship providing the thrilling context for visits to the on-board environmental education stations. Classroom of the Waves is part of a multipronged effort run by Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, a nonprofit that offers, among other programs, outreach activities for inner city students, full-day beach and marsh outings, and other professional development courses for teachers.
