Improving Fall Risk Factor Identification and Documentation of Risk Reduction Strategies by Rehabilitation Therapists through Continuing Education
Karnes, Michele J.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, D'Youville College
This static group comparison study determined that an educational intervention was effective in increasing fall risk factor assessment, documentation of fall risk factors, and strategies devised to reduce fall risk factors by rehabilitation therapists for their older adult outpatients in clinics. Results showed that experimental group identified 103 risk factors in 25 patient charts versus only 6 in the control group charts (p less than 0.001). Educated therapists also documented more fall risk factor strategies (p less than 0.001). These results demonstrate that therapists must be educated to identify fall risk factors in their outpatient to reduce fall risk factors and prevent falls before a first fall or fall with significant injury. In order to meet the need for identification of currently undetected fall risk factors in a generation of baby boomers approaching older adulthood, this study shows outpatient therapists need to be educated to prevent devastating falls and fall outcomes.
