A curriculum examining various aspects of the Mexican American culture was designed for a training program conducted by the Texas Department of Public Welfare for its case workers and other personnel. Intended to heighten awareness of the cultural variables affecting the relationship of Mexican American clients to case workers and to the utilization of social services, the curriculum is arranged into four modules which may be conducted in two full days or in four half-day sessions. The first provides an introduction to the Mexican American household and culture; describes family traditions, values, the Curanderismo healing practices and coping mechanisms; and examines traditional cultural views and traits. The second module looks at patterns of Mexican American life and includes demographic characteristics, as well as facts and statistics relating to facets of an elderly Mexican person's daily life. It helps the caseworker identify probable needs of the elderly and assess their coping abilities. The Mexican American community is the subject of the third module. It lists resources as well as undesirable characteristics of the barrio and identifies potential obstacles to effective interaction with elderly Mexican Americans. The final module deals with Mexican civil rights and trends influencing the present social status of the Mexican American. Each of the four modules presents opportunities for discussion to exchange ideas and opinions. (DS)
