The 1984-1985 annual report of the Council for National Academic Awards in England and Scotland is presented. The Council awards degrees and other academic qualifications to students who complete approved courses of study or research in polytechnics and higher education institutions other than universities in the United Kingdom. In this capacity the Council also validates and reviews courses. The work of validating committees in the following subjects is summarized: art and design, arts and humanities, the built environment, business and management, engineering, science and technology, social sciences, and teacher education. Major policy issues considered by the Council during 1984-1985 concerned: the Report of the Lindop Committee on academic validation in public sector higher education; allowance for special agreements between the Council and institutions; the development of the Council's relationship with the National Advisory Body for Local Authority Higher Education, and the issuing of a Government Green Paper on higher education. Financial statements of the Council are included, along with 19 statistical tables on courses and student enrollments and awards during 1984-1985. (SW)
