Elementary Teacher Retention in a Southern Rural School District
Jardinella, Kira
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Leo University
Teachers are among the most critical stakeholders within the school community. Effective teachers are needed to provide students with a quality education and to prepare them for success both in and out of the classroom (Miller et al., 2020). Almost half of all teachers leave the profession within their first five years of teaching. In Florida, 40% of teachers leave early in their careers (FEA, 2021). When comparing teacher retention rates across rural, urban, and suburban school districts throughout Florida, there is a disparity in the teacher retention rates between elementary teachers in two rural districts, Rural District A and Rural District B (CCSD, 2021; WCSD, 2021). Many different reasons contribute to the high teacher turnover rate. However, there is a high teacher retention rate throughout rural elementary schools in a district located in a southern state. This research study focuses on the positive factors that rural elementary teachers perceive to influence them to remain in the profession. I want to understand how these factors compare between beginning, middle, and late-career teachers. A Likert survey was distributed to all rural elementary teachers throughout a district in a southern state. An interview with a select few teacher participants followed the survey. The study aims to understand why Rural District A has a 90% retention rate. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
