This article presents the story of Wilson College, the only college in the United States where a group of alumnae took the trustees to court over the issue of the announced closing and won the case. The court reversed the trustees' decision on the grounds that the college had failed to seek approval from the court before announcing the change in the institution. The wish of the trustees was to convert the assets of the college into a foundation that would support liberal education for women. The court's decision, as well as the decision of the trustees and the way the announced closing was handled, was controversial within higher education, within the alumnae, and within the Chambersburg community. The higher education community feared courts reversing duly made actions of boards of trustees; some alumnae and many of the trustees believed that the college should be closed if it could not be as it always had been--a selective residential liberal arts college; the Chambersburg community was torn since some of the trustees lived in Chambersburg, the land was valuable, and the college was a source of revenue.
