"Context matters" is an alternative title to this article. All moderation is about context; the surrounding matter that defines and affects most everything. Moderation refers to one entity associated with a change in the relation between two other entities or variables. Moderators are examples of the "third variable" issue that pertains to the relation of two variables. Two variables may be related because of an intervening third variable (called mediation), or the relation may be modified by the presence or absence of a third variable (moderation). The author sees the focus on moderation as a vital aspect for the field of counseling psychology but one that is typically ignored in the research. This relative lack of examinations of moderation stems from a limited understanding of the process of testing moderation and also due to the difficulty of examining moderation. Problems not withstanding, it is important to examine moderation, and the field has grown most sophisticated in doing so. In this article, the author offers some of his research that has focused on moderations as an example of this growing sophistication over time. He also points to some future directions for his work.
