A study was conducted to produce a graphic representation of the needs of the displaced homemaker (single parent and homemaker) population in New Jersey and to identify the services available to them. Data were collected from 28 sites using a mailed survey to program directors and face-to-face interviews with program participants and directors. The program directors surveyed identified job training as the major need of the population, along with counseling and educational services in the areas of marriage and divorce, parenting skills, identity/self-esteem, consumer education, death/disability of a spouse, health care, sexuality, nutrition, and race relations. The programs offer these services in general, but few provide them in a comprehensive program. Child care services are perceived as a major need not always provided. The study also found that the single parents and homemakers in the state are usually living below the poverty level, that 47 percent of these women receive AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children) assistance, and that they desire job training and permanent jobs that will permit them to earn above the welfare allowance. Most of the women surveyed have dependent children. They identified child care as a primary need, followed by career counseling, skills assessment, job training, job search strategies, job placement, resume writing, and interview techniques. Recommendations include encouraging women to recognize the benefits of nontraditional occupations, providing support services and job training, and targeting services to unserved groups.
