Impact of Teacher Supports and Workplace Settings on Retaining Teachers in New Jersey Schools
Cheasty, Michelle E.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Teacher turnover in New Jersey public schools continues to grow every year. As a result, schools and school districts are continuously seeking ways to ensure that every position available is staffed with highly qualified teachers. In addition, schools seek to provide familiarity and stability to those involved with the schools. In an effort to combat the growing teacher turnover rate, school districts are seeking ways to assist teachers, such as enhanced communication and collaboration, administrative support, additional professional development opportunities and/or teacher mentor programs stay with a particular school district. School districts also need to examine resources available to reduce teacher turnover, as well as the cost of continuous teacher turnover. Overall, reductions in teacher turnover have cascading benefits to society. The study demonstrated that the teacher supports and workplace settings, as noted in the literature review, do contribute to a reduction in teacher turnover. It is recommended, as a result of the information collected through the study, that school districts examine ways to implement increased professional or staff development opportunities, communication and/or collaboration opportunities, mentoring or coaching programs, and administrative support programs.
