Teacher Supply and Demand in Maryland 1987-1990.
Maryland State Board for Higher Education, Annapolis.; Maryland State Dept. of Education, Baltimore.
This report presents an overview of teacher supply and demand in the state of Maryland. Section I provides a description of the national debate about teacher shortages and raises the question of where imbalances in the supply and demand for teachers exist and how they may be rectified. In section II, the general purposes of the study are presented and analyzed, and the format of the report is outlined. The broad purposes of the study are to provide shortage information to the Maryland State Board of Education, provide teacher staffing information to educational policy makers, and to contribute to national efforts to collect supply and demand data. The third section presents a detailed account of the methodology that was used for the study. In section IV, the results of the study are discussed. Five shortage areas are identified: special education, mathematics, physical sciences, industrial arts, and trades and industry. The final section contains recommendations on courses of action that are directly implied by imbalances between supply and demand, and courses of action that are preventive in nature, based upon trend data appearing in the report. Data from the study are presented in tables. (JD)
