Graduate Enhancement for Minority Studies (GEMS): Case Study of a Graduate Student Recruitment Program
Greer, Tomika; Johnson, Olivia; Delk, Desmond
College Student Journal, v55 n4 p371-386 Dec 2021
There is a dearth of research on factors that increase the likelihood of underrepresented minority (URM) college students' enrollment and completion of graduate studies in the social sciences. To address this gap, we implemented the Graduate Enhancement for Minority Studies (GEMS) program and present an evaluative case study of the first implementation of the two-day recruitment program. Social reproduction theory and theory of graduate student socialization were used as a conceptual framework for designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the GEMS program. Following completion of the program GEMS participants expressed intent to apply to graduate school, which is paramount in the current context of disproportionately negative impacts of the public health pandemic in conjunction with structural racism in higher education and the larger society.
