Sexual harassment in student-teacher relationships at Iowa State University was investigated in 1981. A questionnaire was sent to 1,000 male and female undergraduate and graduate students, and 372 responses were received. One focus was to determine what types of teacher behavior students considered to be sexual harassment, and to what extent male and female students differed in their definitions of sexual harassment. Over 90 percent of both male and female students considered explicitly sexual propositions, physical advances, and sexual bribery to be sexual harassment. Different perceptions were found concerning whether five other types of behavior were sexually harassing. Attention was also directed to respondents' perceptions about the extent to which most female and male students experienced each of the eight types of behavior. Students also reported on the frequency of personally experiencing each of the behaviors. Several questions were addressed only to those students who had personally experienced physical advances, explicit sexual propositions, or sexual bribery from faculty members. Reporting of incidents of harassing behavior was also considered. Recommendations to the college and a questionnaire are included. (SW)
